Stretch Like a CAT: Preventing Injury for the Industrial Athlete

In construction, mining, and manufacturing industries, typical “Stretch and Flex” programs have wide variation and often limited effectiveness.  Many are cookie cutter, lacking functional crossover to the employees they are trying to help.  Even more, programs are outdated, impractical, and ineffective.

At Catamount Consulting, our program, Stretch like a CAT, is science-based, user-friendly and proven to be effective.  We coach your industrial athletes, understanding how the parts work together as a whole. Our results demonstrate improvements in body awareness, quality of movement, mental clarity, and safety engagement.

Connection, Action, and Teamwork are the fundamentals of our program.

Connection

Many musculoskeletal disorders or repetitive motion injuries are due to an individual’s lack of awareness of their body position and muscle activation. Prolonged holds of stressful postures, utilizing stabilization muscles as prime movers, breath holding, and a lack of top-down coordination all contribute to injury.

At Catamount, connection is one of our core philosophies.  We want to connect each athlete to their body, connect their awareness to every job task, and connect the athletes together as a team.  Each “Stretch like a CAT” is customized and improves the mind-body connection. Through principles of motor learning and neuromuscular feedback, we train for the day ahead.

Action

At Catamount, we take action.  Our approach is proactive, agile, and effective.  Our bodies are complex, and our experts understand how they work.  We have built-in defense systems that rapidly contract a muscle if a threat is detected.  If we are tense and on high alert as we go into our day, we can place ourselves at a higher risk of injury.  Stretch like a CAT tells the brain that the body is safe.  Our dynamic stretches target the golgi tendon organ in the muscle, which overrides the protective reflex and leads to muscle relaxation.  Our stretching sequence, incorporating yoga positions and breathwork, facilitates stress reduction and enhanced mood.

We believe that movement is the solution to stagnation, individually and corporately.  Each dynamic movement of Stretch like a CAT flushes waste out of muscles and improves blood flow.  The program sets in motion a larger shift in the safety awareness of each industrial athlete.

Teamwork

Barriers to employee participation in injury prevention programs can be mental, physical, or perceptual.  Stretch like a CAT is your solution.  We target mental barriers by teaching the “why” along with the “how.”  We adapt to physical barriers with easy-to-understand movements and simple modifications.  We overcome perceptual barriers through our science-based and participatory approach.  A synergistic team’s overall performance is greater than the sum of its individual members’ contributions.  When we move like a team, we begin to think like a team.

Stretch like a CAT goes hand in hand with the rest of the cutting-edge offerings at Catamount Consulting.  When we think strategically and train appropriately, we will WIN the fight against injuries, become more resilient to stress, and create stronger, more connected teams.
